Zhushikou, meaning ‘Pearl Market entrance’, used to be a Ming dynasty pig market. When it closed during the Qing dynasty, the name changed, but the pronunciation didn’t, as pigs and pearls are homonyms! The pig market was replaced with a number of theatres.
